Input 10 - Rules Passive Forms


  • Use the passive when you want: 
  1. To talk about actions, events, and processes when who or what causes the action, event, or process is unknown or unimportant. This is often the case in writing (or more formal speech)
  2. To put new information or longer expressions later in the sentence.
  • Example: a. The bikini was bought for $61. 
  • Example: b. Someone bought the bikini for $61. 
  • Example: c. The bikini was bought by Robert Earl, the con-founder of Planet Hollywood 
  • Example: d. Robert Earl, the co-founder of Planet Hollywood, bought the bikini 

  • Form: vert to be +past participle
